Arthur Russell-Love is Overtaking Me (Part 2)

Most of you who are familiar with Arthur Russell are almost certainly more aware of his work as an innovative disco producer than of the work compiled on Love is Overtaking Me. Audika's fifth installment in a series of re-issues of Arthur Russell's still under-appreciated body of work, Love is Overtaking Me is comprised of 21 demos and home recordings of unreleased pop, country, and folk. In keeping with the majority of Russell's work the songs here are intensely personal. Deeply affecting without being obtrusive, heartfelt without becoming overbearing. However, having been stripped of the more existential tendencies of much of his previous work to evolve endlessly, a testament to his near legendary penchant for constant revision (it's been stated that since his death from aids in 1992 there have been discovered over 1,000 tapes of unreleased material, 40 of which are re-workings of one piece), these songs become arguably some of his most accessible. There is familiarity coded in the dna of this record. In the dethawed chorus of 'Oh Fernanda Why' and the plinking metronomic meditation 'Love Comes Back'. In the post adolescent monotone of 'Time Away', vaguely reminiscent of Jonathan Richmann's crooning for The Modern Lovers. Coincidentally, Arthur recruited Ernie Brooks of the Modern Lovers for his band The Flying Hearts from '75 to '79. One of many cultural figures influenced by Arthur's music, including John Cage, Allen Ginsberg, John Hammond, David Byrne, and Rhys Chatham. Love is Overtaking Me's tracks were selected by Audika's Steve Knutson, Ernie Brooks, and Russell's partner/holder of estate Tom Lee. who has also provided extensive liner notes illustrating unparalleled perspective of Russell's work. Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear contributed to mixing, restoration, and editing of the album.

Love is Overtaking Me, being as a whole, a powerfully intimate portrait of a musical personality as unique and vital as Arthur Russell stands to defend a statement written about Russell at the time of his death: "his songs were so personal, that it seems as though he simply vanished into his music."

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Apologies for the recent drying up of a once robust stream of new musics. My recent re-relocation back to Portland had left me internet handicapped for a few weeks. However, Mark's triumphant return from Europe has followed through on its promise of a wireless signal decidedly less anemic than the one my unfortunate laptop airport card had occasionally absently reached for in its myriad dysfunction. I've decided to celebrate with a gorging of new music.

First off, a new link to that High Places debut:

Deerhoof-Offend Maggie

I would hurry up and download this while you still can. I meant to post it two days ago, but my airport card is officially totally fucked. Anyway, this took some digging, and I don't imagine it'll take very long for someone to discover it and kill the link. Also, I can't post the album artwork, which a lot of people don't like, but I think is awesome, because I'm on a library computer.

Atlas Sound-Logos

This is approximately a million times better than his last effort which, in all honesty, was really pretty unremarkable. In fact, it's pretty frustrating when a record that so clearly hinges on such uninspired fumbling around inside pro tools presets is given the degree of attention that 'Let the Blind' received. But I'm not bitter, and I'm happy to see that Bradford Cox is capable of a record that I not only don't find myself struggling to pay attention to, but actually find myself enjoying pretty thoroughly at times.

Burning Star Core-Challenger

C. Spencer Yeh is a motherfucker. Once upon a time I saw him with just a mic and one of those digitech rpx digital effects processors that pretty much anyone with an electric guitar in 1999 owned. Even then, he blew my mind into a million pieces. And every time I've heard him since, live or on record, be it methodically deconstructing violins on stage, or erecting massive, emotional batteries of droning melody I've been completely floored.

HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED!!!

U.S. Girls-Introducing...

Like Grouper's deformed, ill-mannered twin most of the songs on U.S. Girls debut for SiltBreeze are a litany of contact mic'd sheet metal, pissed on drum machines, mangy phased out stabs of guitar filtered through the pinhole pricked ears of a practice amp, clattering and shrill two chord piano rumblings, and a frail, female caterwauling lost in a tactless soup of echo, moaning torch songs above the hiss of the tape.

Also, she is from Chicago and hopefully going to play a show with me a Subterrannean relatively soon.

The Studio-Yearbook 2

Poor Air France, everytime they try to put something out The Studio come along and do the same thing but better. this is personally one of the most eagerly anticipated releases of the year, mainly because after listening to Yearbook 1 it became pretty apparent that these guys don't make mistakes. Forget 'In This Club', The Studio's cover of The Shout Out Loud's 'Impossible' IS your summer jam.

Singer-Unhistories

Todd Rittman and Adma Vida of U.S. Maple have a band called Singer. They're on tour right now, but probably aren't coming anywhere close to you. They just played last night in Portland with Wolf Eyes, and they're pretty much skipping over the middle of the country.. They're pretty amazing though.
